Friday, October 5, 2007 was the opening of the newest exhibition, The Artist’s Hand: The Art of Nicolai Fechin. The bold touch of the artist Nicolai Fechin (1881-1955) is evident in his paintings, drawings and sculpture. Fechin, an emigrant from Russia, found a new artistic home in New Mexico, where he created his most memorable works. This exhibition closes December 29, 2007.
Block by Block: Gustave Baumann Wood Blocks and Prints is on exhibition from October 5 until November 10, 2007. The exhibition shows how Baumann created his print Bound for Taos beginning with the preliminary print and building to the final print with all the wood blocks used and the resulting proofs. It also features additional Baumann works. An added bonus to the exhibition is a children’s hands-on activity teaching the art of print making that is located in the hallway adjacent to the Baumann exhibition.

Shangri La
Shangri La sponsored a presentation by Richard Louv, the author of Last Child in the Woods last Thursday evening at the Lutcher Theater. Judging from the comments and nodding of heads in the audience when Mr. Louv spoke of the importance of exposing children to the learning opportunities to be found outdoors, his talk was a success. Prior to the presentation, a teacher’s reception was held on the 3rd floor of the theater to acquaint educators from throughout Southeast Texas with the various programs and resources available to them.
On Friday morning, a "maiden voyage" was held aboard the Nature Classroom boat with two 4th graders from each school in Orange County to kick off the beginning of fall boat trips to the new Nature Center outpost(s). Local media rode on a separate boat in order to record the event. The students were told that they were to be "explorers" for the morning and that their mission was to explore the magic and mysteries of Shangri La. Following their "exploration" they were all treated to a presentation by Talbert Meadows, a Shangri La Stark Foundation 10/8/2007 Stark Foundation 10/8/2007
volunteer, of different birds that can be found inside Shangri La. They not only saw birds such as a hooded warbler, Carolina wren, eastern phoebe, and cardinal, but some students were able to help Mr. Meadows release the birds back into the air. After all the exploration and other activities the students took part in, they had worked up quite an appetite and were treated to pizza before heading back down the bayou to end their excursion.
Thanks to all Shangri La and Theater employees who worked tirelessly to help make last week’s events a total success. Special thanks go out to Ms. Cecil Broom, who was a lifesaver during the book sale held before and after Mr. Louv’s presentation.
Our new intern, Carrie McAtee, who hails from Peculiar, Missouri, literally hit the door running this past Monday morning, her first day of work. Carrie did an outstanding job to help make the week’s activities happen smoothly and successfully. We are happy to welcome her to our team.

The two funniest cross-dressing actors in the business are coming to Orange this December with the hilarious A TUNA CHRISTMAS!
Joe Sears and Jaston Williams star as all the outlandish characters of Tuna, Texas. It’s 24 hours before Christmas and the delightfully eccentric characters attempt to cope with seasonal traumas such as a disaster prone little theatre production of A Christmas Carol, and a yard-decorating contest that is being sabotaged by a mysterious Christmas phantom! Bring the whole family and join in the holiday fun!

A matinee has been added to "ANNIE" on Saturday, February 2nd. The nighttime performance is over 80% sold.
The new 400 Amp electrical service added this summer was put to full use Saturday night at EVITA. Looks like more lights were used at that performance than at any previous show. And the company sound operator did an excellent job.
Local motel accommodations caused major problems for EVITA cast. Thanks to Cris McLeod and the Guild Hospitality crew they felt like we were going above and beyond to make their trip here pleasant.
