Plano AC Repair Service owner Steve Lauten, President of Total Air and Heat in Plano, warns of indoor air summer pollutants that can cause health problems.

There are two times of year when the weather drives us indoors... the dead of winter when it is too cold, and the dog days of summer when it gets too hot. During those times we tend to spend more time indoors where we can benefit from the comforts afforded us by our heating and cooling systems. Unfortunately, each of these seasonal swings presents some air quality challenges that should be considered.

Indoor air quality has become so serious that the EPA has begun to address the issue with special studies to assess the extent of the danger. EPA studies of indoor air pollutants have found that many common pollutant levels are between 2 and 5 times higher indoors than outside and some pollutants rise to 100 times the levels found outdoors. In recent years comparative risk studies performed by the EPA and the Science Advisory Board have consistently ranked indoor air pollution among the top 5 environmental risks to public health.

If that sounds scary to you that is because it is... especially if you consider that during the summer and winter months as much as 90% of your family's time is spent indoors. Hidden dangers like dust mites, molds, mildew, viruses and allergens increase the likelihood of, or irritate, certain health conditions. For children and the elderly this can be especially dangerous.

Irritated eyes, nose and throats can be the first signs of air quality problems. Since these symptoms can be accompanies by colds and the the flu it is important to take note of when and where the symptoms begin. Dont' be afraid to play detective and search for dust and dirt around vents and return air registers. These can be indications of problems with the air cleaning system.

Reduce Indoor Air Quality Risks:

  • Don't smoke indoors, use air-friendly cleaning supplies, and keep pets groomed.
  • Invest in high quality air filters for your home. Let the filter do the work and take the burden off of your lungs. Filters can easily be replaced. Lungs can not.
  • Get an indoor air quality survey. We will be glad to assist but there are many reputable people who can provide the same service.
