Currently 20% of all Texas drivers – nearly 4,000,000 – do not have insurance coverage on their vehicles even though it is against the law. The state requires all drivers to maintain a minimum amount of liability coverage of $25,000 per person / up to $50,000 per occurrence / and $25,000 property damage.
Remember, this is a state minimum and may not give you enough protection in the event of an accident. In fact, most drivers need double that amount of coverage.

TexasSure May Soon Lower Your Auto Insurance Premiums
Texas officials hope that the number of uninsured drivers will decrease now that law enforcement personnel, county tax officials and vehicle inspectors have access to a database that verifies the insurance status of Texas drivers.
A new insurance verification system called TexasSure has been implemented to help cut down on the number of uninsured Texas drivers. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) began using the system in October of 2008.
In fact, when a law enforcement officer pulls over a driver for another offense, he or she may also check to see if the driver has an active insurance policy in the TexasSure system. If not, the driver can be ticketed.
How does that affect you?
Insured Texans are paying nearly $1,000,000,000 annually in additional auto insurance premiums in order to protect themselves from damages following a collision with an uninsured or underinsured driver. If the TexasSure system is successful, you may eventually be able to drop that extra coverage.
TexasSure Aims To Stop Illegal Practices
Even though state law mandates that all motorists have auto insurance, many individuals elect to dodge the requirements by getting temporary insurance. For instance, drivers may sign up for insurance coverage prior to a vehicle inspection or when renewing their car registration only to cancel once they have successfully gotten necessary documentation. Others will secure counterfeit insurance liability cards to achieve the same results.
Since TexasSure is refreshed weekly, it will be much more difficult for motorists to succeed in securing important documentation.
Other States Have Similar Programs
Thirty other states have a program that resembles TexasSure. In all thirty states, the number of uninsured motorists has decreased. This is good news for Texans that are tired of paying higher premiums for individuals that are negligent about purchasing their own auto insurance.
Penalties for being without auto insurance will vary by city. However, individuals can be charged up to a $350 fine for the first offense. They may also have their car impounded for violating the law.
