Multiple Copies of Applications

Below is a transcript of a portion of a North Texas Hyperion User Group Conference workshop led by consultants form US-Analytics. US-Analytics IT infrastructure experts discuss Oracle Hyperion Workforce Planning and answer questions from the audience.

"Now, what about three copies of my application? Yea, it’s going to take up space. You’re going to want a copy on test. Most people will use test for a DR kind of staging thing. We try to keep test up to date if they’re not working on a real DR solution. Then you might have 10 copies of your app because you might put it in dev and you might have Joe’s copy, Sally’s copy or whatever. If you only have one environment your really risking a lot of problems, because not only are you exposing the end users to your tests in dev, but what if someone does something really crazy, ends up putting say a question mark in Oracle Essbase, it’s going to make Oracle Essbase hang. Now your prod in Oracle Essbase is off.

"Also, God forbid someone messes with permissions and the end users get access to your test app or dev app. You’re going end up getting people calling your support all the time, “I put data in, Joe doesn’t see the data.” That’s because you’re using something that you shouldn’t even know exists. I see that all the time when people start with test and let the users work on test, and then they go to prod; they have the old URL in their browser, they don’t change it and they have that problem."
