There are so many wonderful things about the city of Orange that I can’t possibly mention them all in one column. However, I can tell you about a few of my favorite things.
The first place I ever visited in Orange was the Stark Museum of Art. I have to admit I wasn’t sure how much I would enjoy Western art since I have always been a fan of modern art. My doubts were quickly erased. As I walked through the galleries I was awestruck at the incredible works. Plus, the docent helped me understand the pieces from not only an artistic perspective but also a historical one, helping me to enjoy my visit that much more. My visit definitely opened my eyes to a new genre of art and taught me a little about life in the American West.
Another favorite stop was the W. H. Stark House. I had never been in a true Victorian home, so I was excited to see this attraction. I was amazed from the moment I approached the front door and saw the impressive cut glass. Every turn in the house revealed another fascinating display, from the jaw-dropping china-filled cabinets to the envy-inspiring third-floor closet – even told my architect husband that our next house must have a closet like the one in the W. H. Stark House. Here's hoping!
Of course, I haven’t even mentioned how excited I was to visit Lutcher Theater and walk the same hallways as Liberace, Marcel Marceau, and many other amazing talents once did and still do. I also was sincerely touched during a sneak preview of Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, when I saw first-hand the excitement that nature can inspire in a group of children. This experience prompted me to encourage my kid brother to drop the remote control and go enjoy the outdoors!
While these are all experiences I will never forget, there is still one thing I have enjoyed more than anything – the people. I love the hospitality I always encounter anytime I visit with someone from Orange, whether in person or on the phone. People take the time to ask how I’m doing, and they actually listen. It’s a simple concept that is widely ignored in this day and age – but not in Orange.
A newfound appreciation of Western art. An inspiring look at the lifestyle of the past. A shared space with legends. A touching encounter with nature. A genuine conversation. These are a few of my favorite things about Orange. What are some of yours? Send them to me at nikki.sumrow@imaginuity.com. I may even share your story right here in this column. I can’t wait to hear from you and learn about the things that make you as proud to live in Orange as I have been to visit it.
This message was also printed in the December 26, 2007, issue of The Orange Leader by guest columnist Nikki Sumrow. You can read a new column each Wednesday in The Orange Leader discussing the latest Orange events and activities.
